St. Raphael’s Programs for Enrichment and Growth
Enriching programs at St. Raphael School are varied to meet the needs and interests of our diverse student population.
Academic Enrichment and Tutoring
Teachers at St. Raphael provide one hour of time one day per week for the purpose of after school tutoring. Students in grades 6 – 8 can attend tutoring three days a week with a different teacher each day. On-site Saturday tutoring is offered once a month from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. for all grades. Students from USC volunteer to tutor and mentor students, working in classrooms as aides and teaming up to offer mini-courses. Students in Grades 6 – 8 compete as a team in the annual Archdiocesan Academic Decathlon. Volunteer mentors assist 8th grade students in identifying and applying to Catholic, Charter and Magnet high schools in Los Angeles.
Extra-curricular activities and performing arts: St. Raphael students have multiple opportunities to express their cultural heritages and represent their individuality through the performing arts. The school offers an inspirational music room equipped with donated keyboards and guitars. Vocal and instrumental music is provided weekly to Kindergarten and grades 1 – 8. Students have the opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular gospel choir. Students in grades K – 8 practice and perform in the school’s annual Christmas pageant. Christmas songs and dances from around the world and original class skits are eagerly anticipated pageant highlights. The school partners with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Opera to bring music to the classroom and provide field trip experiences for our students. Once a week, Polynesian Dance classes are offered on a fee basis.
